“Die Hard 6”: Disney apparently shot down the action sequel quietly!
Disney paid more than $ 70 billion for competitor 21st Century Fox in March. But a merger of this size also means that a number of projects will fall by the wayside …
When a distributor launches films in the cinema, they usually want as many potential viewers as possible to hear about them. But in the past few weeks Disney has released two films in German cinemas with “Lucy In The Sky” with Natalie Portman and the Peter Pan adaptation “A Life Between Times” without telling anyone. The titles did not even appear in the official start lists – you had to happen to look at the program of the local cinema to even notice that they had started (or of course leaf through the weekly overviews here on .de) …
But what does this have to do with “Die Hard 6”? The answer is: quite a lot! Because when you look at a huge studio like Fox, you automatically get a lot of stuff that you don’t really want 123Movies. So something like “Lucy In The Sky”. Something like “A Life Between Times”. Or something like the rights to the “Die Hard” franchise, which doesn’t fit the core of the Disney brand at all – and whose future profitability after the disappointing audience reaction to “Die Hard 5 – A Good Day to Die” is anything but certain anyway!

After “Die Hard 5”: A whole new approach!
For years a fresh concept for “Die Hard 6” was worked out. In the end, director Len Wiseman (“Underworld”) seemed to prevail, who wanted to turn the sixth part into a sequel and a prequel at the same time:

The aging ex-cop John McClane, again played by Bruce Willis, should experience another lead-laden adventure. At the same time, flashbacks should also tell of his young years as a patrolman and his first big case. Because of these two parallel levels, the film should simply be called “McClane”. With the brothers Chad and Carey Hayes (“The Conjuring”) scriptwriters have even been hired.

Radio silence becomes dead silence
But then came the Disney takeover – and while Fox executives were understandably attached to the franchise that had kept the studio profitable for nearly 30 years, it was a lot easier for the new Disney bosses to pull the plug. Shortly after the merger, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura was at least reasonably optimistic in an interview with Slashfilm in April 2019: Disney would have liked the script, but even he would not have the slightest idea whether there are concrete plans for a production.

Almost a year and a half and a corona pandemic later, however, it can now be said with reasonable certainty: After so many months of silence, the project “Die Hard 6” will no longer come in its previous form! If Disney ever does anything with the brand again, there might be a real reboot at some point – or a TV series, as with “Lethal Weapon”.

And to be honest: Maybe this is the right decision – should the pork cheeks finally rest in peace …
